Review of Transcend SSD18M solid-state drive 128GB

Transcend manufactures portable storage devices like pen drives, external hard drives, etc. at affordable costs. Transcend SSD 18M is a solid-state hard drive which has static parts to store data. The portability of Transcend SSD 18M is an additional bonus. The 128 GB Transcend SSD 18M costs around $440, but it’s worth for the faster transfer speeds, eSata/USB combo and the small foot print.

Design specification and features present in Transcend SSD 18M:

Transcend SSD 18M has a subtle design and many other have no idea of what design it is. It has a glossy diamond finish on a black plastic. The logo of Transcend appears in one corner. It covers 8 cm by length, 1.25cm by width and 5cm by height. It contains eSATA and USB port on one side of the drive. Entire weight of this hard drive is 50grams. Toshiba A300 PSAGCA-09Y01N

The A300 is a full-sized laptop with a high-gloss finish and a 15.4in WXGA display. My review sample ran Vista Home Premium on a Core2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz processor with a hefty 4G of RAM and a 400G hard drive.

Pros: With specifications like this, you’d certainly expect the A300 to perform well, and it didn’t disappoint, acing my performance tests both for basic office applications and more hardcore efforts like video rendering and gaming. As with many Toshiba laptops, the keyboard is very good, with excellent key travel characteristics.

Cons: It’s certainly powerful, but there are some drawbacks to that. First up, it’s physically huge – this is much more a desktop replacement machine than a portable machine. Also, having that much power also requires power, and the A300’s battery life was distinctly average.

Overall I give this a 3.5/5 – A good match for those who want power in attractive casing.

Apple iLife ‘09

Apple’s iLife ’09 suite updates the compan’ys ‘fun’ suite of applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb and iDVD. New features include facial and geo-tagging photos, star lessons in GarageBand and a reworked iMovie interface that’s easier to use.

Pros: The new facial recognition feature in iPhoto is surprisingly addictive. GarageBand is well suited now to experts (who will love the flexibility) and novices alike.

Logitech Harmony 1100i Remote Control

The Harmony 1100i is Logitech’s premium universal remote control within its Harmony range. It features a large LCD touchscreen next to controls that should work on any device (volume, channels and directional choices).

Pros: Like the rest of the Harmony range, the 1100i’s emphasis is on ‘activities’, which you predefine via a very slick Web interface. However, this model takes this a little further than other Harmony remotes, as you can also define your own buttons and determine the screen placement for them.

Cons: Unlike wand-style remotes, the 1100i is strictly a two-sided affair, which can be fiddly. I found one HDMI switch in the setup that couldn’t be identified, which was disappointing. It also comes with an undeniably premium price tag, which puts it out of reach of many home theatre enthusiasts.

Overall I give this a 3/5 – A nice remote, but too costly.

Linksys Media Hub NMH305

The Media Hub is, in essence, a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device – a way to have a big, home-based external pool of storage for files, documents and multimedia that can then be shared out to any PC or compatible home AV equipment. Linksys’s promise is that, unlike many other NAS units, the Media Hub makes it easy.
